The Elephant

There is a long story that goes with this one, but I'll narrow it down for the Blog. A very famous un and coming artist was in the Colorado Springs area back in the early 50's and apparently owed some money to my grandfather, who was a prominent Doctor. This hand carved & painted elephant toy was a favorite "toy" for my father and my Aunt Katie as children. Even my three sibling and I used to ride on this as kids. By the time I inherited it, there were no ears, tusks, tail and some of the feet were broken. Working on old furniture can be challenging enough, but producing African elephant ears, tusks and tail by hand was definitely a new one for me!
